In 1968, Professor Tiang Tansanguan attempted to find land to set up a farm as a training center for veterinary students as he foresaw the importance of giving students more opportunities to interact with farm and economic animals. By that time, General Prapas Jarusathien, President of Chulalongkorn University, serving as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior transferred a vacant land owned by Ministery of the Interior, 79 rai., in Bo Phlap Subdistrict, Mueang District, Nakhon Pathom Province to the Faculty of Veterinary Science and remarked that unless the (land) transfer to the Faculty was for the better, the transfer was meaningless. Therefore, the land was organized as a training field for students to practice animal husbandry. The university thus honored “Jarusthian” as the name of the student training center and became a part of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Now it is developed into the training center, animal hospital, and research center of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University to support teaching, student training, research, and checking animal health care for livestock and pets in the local neighborhood. The faculty also sells farm products as welfare to staff and civil servants in faculties and universities.

  ประวัติห้องสมุดฯ  พ.ศ. 2477       พ.ร.บ.จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยจัดตั้งแผนกอิสระชื่อ  แผนกสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ พ.ศ. 2478       จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยเริ่มมีนิสิตเตรียมสัตวแพทย์ พ.ศ. 2481       ศาสตราจารย์ พันโท หลวงชัย อัศวรักษ์ รับตำแหน่งหัวหน้าแผนกวิชาอิสระสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ และได้มี “ห้องสมุด” ซึ่งเป็นห้องอ่านหนังสือสำหรับอาจารย์ พ.ศ. 2482       แผนกวิชาสัตวแพทย์ได้จ้างอาจารย์ชาวอังกฤษ 2ท่าน คือ Dr.R.P.Jones และ Dr.Winther ซึ่งอาจารย์ทั้งสองได้มีส่วนสนับสนุนการจัดตั้งห้องสมุด                        โดยได้บริจาคหนังสือส่วนตัวด้านสัตวแพทย์หลายเล่ม พ.ศ. 2495       ห้องสมุดได้ย้ายมาอยู่ตึกเก่าของคณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ ถนนสนามม้า หรือถนนอังรีดูนังต์ในปัจจุบัน พ.ศ. 2499       ห้องสมุดย้ายมาอยู่ที่อาคาร 2 รูปตัวยู พ.ศ. 2514       ห้องสมุดย้ายมาอยู่ชั้น 2 ของตึกหัวโต หรือ อาคารชัยอัศวรักษ์ พ.ศ. 2515       ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.อายุส  พิชัยชาญณรงค์ เป็นคณบดี ได้มอบหมายให้ รศ.ระบิล  รัตนพานี (เลขานุการคณะฯ) เป็นผู้รับผิดชอบดูแลห้องสมุด พ.ศ. 2517       รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร. ประจักษ์  พุ่มวิเศษ ได้รับการแต่งตั้งเป็นหัวหน้าห้องสมุด คณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ เนื่องจากเป็นผู้สนใจกิจกรรมห้องสมุด                        จึงได้ทำการปรับปรุงกิจการห้องสมุดคณะฯ เช่น จากระบบดิวอี้ เป็นระบบ CUV  เปลี่ยนระบบการยืม-คืน จัดทำข่าวห้องสมุดคณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์                        และขอเปลี่ยนชื่อ ห้องสมุดคณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ เป็น ห้องสมุดและศูนย์เอกสารการสัตว์ พ.ศ. 2523       นางสาวเปล่งศรี  อิงคนินันท์ ได้รับการแต่งตั้งเป็นหัวหน้าห้องสมุดฯ พ.ศ. 2540       ห้องสมุดและศูนย์เอกสารการสัตว์ ได้ย้ายจากชั้น 2 อาคารชัยอัศวรักษ์ มาอยู่ชั้น 9 อาคาร 60 ปีสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ พ.ศ. 2556       นางการุณ  เสนชู  ได้รับการแต่งตั้งเป็นหัวหน้าห้องสมุดฯ      ปัจจุบันห้องสมุดฯ มีพื้นทีให้บริการทั้งหมด 1,200 ตารางเมตรให้บริการแก่คณาจารย์ นิสิต บุคลากร รวมทั้งบุคคลภายนอก จากทุกสถาบัน ปณิธาน สารสนเทศที่ท่านต้องการเราจะจัดหาให้ท่านอย่างถูกต้องและรวดเร็ว พันธกิจ จัดหารวบรวมและพัฒนาสารสนเทศทางการสัตว์ ตามหลักสูตรของคณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ บริหารจัดการและวิเคราะห์สารสนเทศทางการสัตว์ เพื่อการเรียนการสอน การค้นคว้าวิจัย สำหรับอาจารย์ นิสิต บุคลากร คณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ บุคคลภายนอก      และผู้สนใจ ให้บริการหลากหลายวิธีการ เพื่อให้อาจารย์ นิสิต บุคลากร และบุคคลภายนอก เข้าถึงทรัพยากรสารสนเทศด้านการสัตว์ได้รวดเร็วและตรงตามความต้องการ เกียรติประวัติและความสำเร็จ พ.ศ. 2542       ห้องสมุดและศูนย์เอกสารการสัตว์ได้รับการคัดเลือกจากสมาคมห้องสมุดแห่งประเทศไทยในพระราชูปถัมภ์ของสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ                        สยามบรมราชกุมารีให้เป็นห้องสมุดเฉพาะดีเด่น พ.ศ. 2547       ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสำนักงานคณะกรรมการวิจัยแห่งชาติจัดทำงานวิจัยเรื่อง การรวบรวมและสังเคราะห์งานวิจัยกุ้งทะเลของประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2548       ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสำนักคณะกรรมการวิจัยแห่งชาติจัดทำงานวิจัยเรื่อง การพัฒนาเครือข่ายฐานข้อมูลงานวิจัยกุ้งแห่งชาติ พ.ศ. 2550       ได้รับการสนับสนุนจาก สำนักงานคณะกรรมการวิจัยแห่งชาติจัดทำงานวิจัยเรื่อง การรวบรวมวิเคราะห์และสังเคราะห์งานวิจัยสัตว์ปีกในประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2552       ได้รับคัดเลือกจากสำนักงานคณะกรรมการวิจัยแห่งชาติ (วช) ให้เป็น 1 ใน 6 หน่วยงานนำร่องในโครงการ “ระบบเชื่อมโยงข้อมูลผลงานวิจัยข้ามหน่วยงาน”(Research Indexing Hub) ระดับประเทศ

  When our beloved pet that is like a family member dies, the last possible merit we could make together is to donate its body to the Faculty of Veterinary Science’s (CUVET’s) Animal Cadaver Donation Center to be studied by veterinary science students for the purpose of veterinary students’ education and research. What kind of pets can be donated? CUVET’s Animal Cadaver Donation Center accepts donations of all animals, regardless of age, breed, or size. Exotic animals and pets can also be donated.  So far, the smallest animal that the owner has ever donated was a hamster.  People also donated dwarf hedgehogs, prairie dogs, exotic snakes, and African snakehead, which is the largest animal ever received.  Thai veterinary circles have never studied or had any knowledge about these animals’ anatomy before, so the donation was even more beneficial to the public The animals that CANNOT be donated are those that died from diseases such as invasive cancer, or zoonotic diseases such as rabies and tuberculosis. The pets that comprise the majority of cadavers  Veterinary science classes use “dog cadavers” the most (about 70-80 percent), followed by cats and other animals. The ideal dog cadavers are big dogs weighing about 15-25 kgs. because of their large organs which are visible.  For cats, the most desirable size is about 3-5  kgs, but others are also acceptable. Preparing the pet body for donation As soon as the pet dies, the owner who wishes to donate must put their pet in a plastic bag to freeze it at 4 degrees Celsius, then bring it to the center within 24 hours after the pet has passed away. If not frozen immediately, or kept frozen longer than 24 hours, the body can still be donated, but some organs, such as digestive organs or intestines, may disintegrate and may not be useful to study. Once the body has been prepared, contact the center, then bring the body to the 5th floor of the Small Animal Hospital Building. The staff will screen the pet history, its cause of death, history of vaccination, and serious infections.  The owner fills out a Consent Form to hand over the animal body, and the process is done. Storing the “Principals” Qualified cadavers are preserved in a formalin-free, soft-body embalming fluid, then stored at a very low temperature. Make merit for the “Principals” Veterinary science students study each cadaver for 1-3 years, after which a merit-making and cremation ceremony would be organized.  There are prayers, laying of the sandalwood flowers, and concluded with ash scattering ceremony by the professors, students, and staff of the center.  Pet owners are also invited to attend this annual event.       

"Chula opens a state-of-the-art innovation center for veterinary students to practice their clinical skills with a simulated and modern lab classroom to hone students’ skills and develop their expertise and a space for international training to promote veterinary and medical education." The Beginning of CU Innovation Center for Veterinary Clinical Training (CU IC-VCT)           Nowadays, modern technology allows educators to create more and more virtual experiences for learners, especially in the fields of human and animal anatomy. It is important to ensure that learners have the skills they need to master before their actual surgery for the peace of mind of both veterinarians and animal owners.       Starting from the Soft Animal Cadaver Innovation, the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University has moved on to build a comprehensive learning center, the CU Innovation Center for Veterinary Clinical Training (CU IC-VCT) to prepare veterinary students to specialize in animal care with virtual skills training laboratories. As the Faculty developed soft body cadaver innovation, which is a method of preserving the cadaver or the principal’s body without formaldehyde, and can be reused many times, without odor, or irritating chemicals, it requires a standardized, controlled-temperature, and surgery-ready classroom. So, we developed the original laboratory into this innovation center Areas within the CU Innovation Center for Veterinary Clinical Training: CU IC-VCT  CU IC-VCT is divided into three operational areas:         1. Laboratory Classroom for Medical Procedures        2. Simulated Surgery Classroom : A multi-purpose classroom for small groups lectures before hands-on               training        3. Skill Labs where students can practice on their own.  The center’s strength is the practical training on veterinary medical procedures in the most realistic setting          The center’s lab is equipped with modern equipment and tools comparable to Chula Small Animal Hospital, so that fourth-year veterinary students can study surgery and practice clinical procedures. Veterinary students will learn from diagnostic radiographs to the principles of surgery, including suture ligature, preoperative animal preparation, anesthesia, surgical incision, suturing, intraoperative animal monitor, internal animal anatomy of diseased animals, to orthopedic surgery to insert devices when animals have bone fractures.         In the course that requires the study of cadavers, the Center will rely on the Animal Cadaver Donation Center for cadaver procurement. Students will also be provided with various models for suturing, intubation, IV practice, and so on, so that they can practice and repeat the procedures until they become proficient.       In addition to the workshop, the center also serves as a venue for the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), which measures the standards of knowledge and skillfulness of veterinary students before their graduation. There are simulated situations for students to perform, from preoperative animal preparation, suturing, preparation of the operating table, palpation, etc.  What does the Skill Lab teach?         Skill Lab is always open to 6th-year students to come and practice their craft and hone their expertise and proficiency before or after their clinical rounds to enhance their confidence. Studying surgery will require about 30 – 50 repetitions to master. The Center provides models and equipment with manuals, such as operation pads, and mannequins to practice abdominal incisions, sutures, and palpation. There are also procedure booklets for students to take home for practice, which must be booked in advance. International academic and training services of the Center             With the well-equipped venue, and a central location in Bangkok, CU IC-VCT has already offered more than 20 training, ranging from surgeries on soft-body cadavers, to orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, endoscopic surgery, intubation, acupuncture, rehabilitation, etc. We invite local and international specialists to provide training to our veterinarians, and those outside Chula, as well as to veterinarians from interested neighboring countries, such as Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan. We provide services to various organizations. Both domestic and foreign companies are interested in doing various trainings with the center.
